Today I am delighted to be the next stop on Michael Wood’s blog tour for his new novel, For Reasons Unknown. For my stop I am going to share with you my review of the book.
Two murders. Twenty years. Now the killer is back for more…
A darkly compelling debut crime novel. The start of a brilliant series, perfect for fans of Stuart MacBride, Val McDermid, and James Oswald.
DCI Matilda Darke has returned to work after a nine month absence. A shadow of her former self, she is tasked with re-opening a cold case: the terrifyingly brutal murders of Miranda and Stefan Harkness. The only witness was their eleven-year-old son, Jonathan, who was too deeply traumatized to speak a word.
Then a dead body is discovered, and the investigation leads back to Matilda’s case. Suddenly the past and present converge, and it seems a killer may have come back for more…
For Reasons Unkown is the authors debut novel and boy what a debut.
The author had me right from the very first chapter. I was well and truly hooked and stayed up late so I could finish it in one day as I could not go to sleep until I knew who the killer was.
The story starts off with a horrible crime that goes unsolved for twenty years. Fast forward twenty years and DCI Matilda Darke who is back off ‘sick’ leave is shoved into a dismal office with a cold case to work on.
The murder of Jonathan’s parents has everyone baffled, including us readers. Throughout the story I kept thinking I knew who the murderer was but was constantly changing my mind. The author does a great job in throwing you off the scent and making it that much harder to work out who it is.
I loved Matildas character and I am so glad that this is one of many novels that will be including her in a new series. Jonathans character is quite a strange one. He has grown up very much a loner, he hates that everyone seems to want something from him because of his past. He just wants to be normal and for people to want to know him for himself. He really is a very troubled soul and one that I just wanted to wrap my arms around and make it all better for him.
For Reasons Unkown is a story that once you start you will not be able to stop. I really could not get through the pages quick enough as I was literally dying to know who was behind it all. The story really picks up pace towards the end and I have to say the whole anticipation and anxiety with the not knowing was worth the wait.
Another book that will be listed as one of my favourite reads for 2015.
