Inside the Whispers (Dr Samantha Willerby [Chilling Thriller] Series Book 1) by A J Waines ***Blog Tour***

I am delighted to be the next stop on the blog tour for the wonderful Inside The Whispers. Today you can see my thoughts on author A J Waines newest novel as well as a quick Q&A with the author herself.

Book Description:

Where the most dangerous place – is inside your own head…

Following a London Tube disaster, three traumatised survivors turn to clinical psychologist, Dr Samantha Willerby, for help – but she’s mystified when their stories don’t add up. Her confusion turns to horror when one by one, instead of recovering, they start committing suicide.

When her partner, Conrad, begins to suffer the same terrifying flashbacks, Sam is desperate to find out what is causing them and a mysterious and chilling crime begins to unravel.

Then the flashbacks begin for Sam…

The first book in the Dr Samantha Willerby Series, INSIDE THE WHISPERS is a tense, haunting Psychological Thriller that will leave your nerves in shreds.

My Thoughts:

I have to say I absolutely loved the story line in Inside The Whispers. It’s not one you come across very often so it had me well and truly hooked right from the start.

Sam (Samantha) has recently just started a new job in a hospital helping patients that are suffering with PTSD. The reader can’t help but be as shocked and confused as Sam when her patients start committing suicide. I think it’s the final straw for Sam when her boyfriend Con starts experiencing the same flashbacks and she knows she has to get to the bottom of it before it’s too late and Con ends up with the same fate as her other patients.

I had so much empathy for Sam. There are a lot of issues in her family life, caused mainly by her older sister ‘Miranda’. Her life seems to be getting on the right track with her new job and her new boyfriend Con and she is as happy as she can be. Unfortunately when her sister turns up at her door unexpectedly and then her patients turning up dead, Sam’s life is suddenly spiralling out of control.

There are so many red herrings in this story that I didn’t know who to like or trust. It’s a novel that will certainly keep it’s readers on it’s toes and have them second guessing everything.

Inside The Whispers is a dark and tense read that is full of suspense. A guaranteed page turner that will certainly mess with the readers mind and is an absolute must read for psychological thrillers. Can not wait for more in this series.

Goodreads rating 4/5 stars.

Inside The Whispers is out now and available to purchase from Amazon.

You usually write stand alone novels, what made you decide to write the first book in this brand new series?
That’s a great question. Having written five stand alones, I thought it would make a dynamic series to have London as the base for several stories with the same gutsy, but vulnerable female psychologist at the core. I could then explore Sam’s character as she faces a range of terrifying challenges through the patients she treats! Originally, I was going to call the next three books the ‘Sam Willerby Trilogy’, but it’s such a mouthful, I’ve decided to call it a ‘series’ instead. Besides, this way also gives me the opportunity to continue Sam’s journey if people warm to her!
Where did the idea come from for the fabulous story line for Inside The Whispers?
I love writing mysteries with a lot of psychological content and most of the main characters in Inside the Whispers, are hiding or running away from something. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disabling condition and has been largely misunderstood until recently. My starting point was to draw on my own experiences as a psychotherapist working with traumatised and suicidal individuals to build a story involving my favourite subjects: secrets, deception and hidden motives! I find the London Underground system fascinating and very creepy, so it seemed the perfect place to start a dark and chilling story.
There seemed to be quite a few red herrings to make it harder for the reader to guess who was behind what was going on throughout the novel. Did you know yourself at the start of the novel who was going to be behind it all or did you decide further into the story?
I did decide right at the start who was going to be behind the deadly series of events and to be honest, I feel the main intrigue in the book is less about ‘who-dun-it’ and more ‘why-dun-it’ and ‘how-dun-it’. I don’t want to give too much away, but I relished the ambiguity – especially morally, of the crime. In fact, you could ask if a crime has been committed at all. The motive behind what takes place is far from clear-cut and I wanted people to think about what they might do, given similar circumstances!
I have to say I can’t wait to see what else is in store for Sam, when can we look forward to reading more about her?
The next book in the series  is called ‘Lost in the Lake’, where Sam treats the enigmatic Rosie, the sole survivor of an accident that sent a van crashing into a lake. Rosie is desperate to piece together her memories of the incident in order to find her viola, which sank without trace and when she insists they return to the scene to relive the fatal incident, the truth finally creeps up on Sam. But by then, she’s seriously out of her depth. I’m pleased to say ‘Lost in the Lake’ will be available in summer 2017.
Lastly are you working on any other projects that you can tell us about?
I’m delighted to let you know that the third book in the Sam Willerby Series is already out of the starting blocks! I love writing about rivers and the next book in the series will be set on a London canal, where you can expect to find Sam struggling to keep her head above water in another mind-twisting confrontation with the criminal mind.
