When Erica’s husband Joel dies in a tragic accident nobody suspects she had anything to do with it. But appearances can be deceptive.
Erica describes her successful, lawyer husband as handsome and charismatic when she recounts their whirlwind marriage. But nothing is what it seems.
What is Erica hiding?
Was Joel’s death really an accident?
Sometimes the truth can be ugly.
Beautiful Liar is a story that is told between chapters that alternate between Erica and Joel in the past and present. As it starts off with Joel’s death it was great to be able to find out more about the build up to his death as well as what was happening in the present.
Joel I have to say is a totally unlikeable character. He has no respect for women in general and the way he treats Erica is appalling. Even from the very beginning you can tell all is not as it seems between these two. Erica may be portraying to the police that her husband was a loving and caring one, but as we soon realise, he is anything but. Joel is very good at manipulating Erica which infuriated me.
Erica I liked. She was quite a quirky character before Joel met her. She has come out of one controlling relationship and doesn’t intend on going into another one. Unluckily for her by the time she realises what Joel is really like it’s to late. She has a great friend in Rose and it was sad to see the two women’s friendship getting very taut over the years due to the ever interfering Joel.
Beautiful Liar is a compelling, and at times an uncomfortable read. It quietly draws you in until before you know it you are gripped and waiting in anticipation for all to be revealed. Crammed full of suspense, this is one thriller you don’t want to miss.
