Bo Luxton has it all—a loving family, a beautiful home in the Lake District, and a clutch of bestselling books to her name. Enter Alice Dark, an aspiring writer who is drifting through life, with a series of dead-end jobs and a freeloading boyfriend. When they meet at a writers’ retreat, the chemistry is instant, and a sinister relationship develops. Or does it? Breathlessly pacey, taut and terrifying, Exquisite is a startlingly original and unbalancing psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last page.
All I can say is I did not expect that!
I really don’t know what I was expecting from this book, but wow! Really, this is one of those books you need to read for yourself to appreciate how wonderful it is.
This is one of those stories that just seems to softly draw you. The authors writing is literally mesmerising. The first couple of pages I was slightly unsure but then I just seemed to sink deeper and deeper into the pages and didn’t come up for air until I had reached the last page. I was so wrapped up in Bo and Alice’s life that I was totally lost to the out side world.
I really liked Alice. She is slightly lost and is simply drifting along in life until she meets Bo who gives her purpose in her writing as well as in her love life.
Bo reminded me of one of those women who likes to nurture everything. I have to admit the relationship between the two women was a strange one. In a way I could see Alice’s attraction to Bo but I have to admit I wondered why someone like Bo would go for Alice.
The story is arranged into sections which also flicks between Alice and Bo. Any other characters in this story are very much in the background so what you get left with is a very taut and almost frenzied read trying to guess where the author was taking us with her story.
Exquisite is very much a story of psychological suspense. It’s stories like these that make the saying ‘the suspense is killing me’ so true! I loved the pace of the story and literally devoured every word in front of me. Such a great book and can’t wait to read more by this author.
My thanks to Orenda Books for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
