Today on my Bookends feature I am delighted to welcome Michael Russell to my blog. Michael is married to non other than best-selling author, Leigh Russell. Like me, I am sure you are dying to find out more about him as well as what it is like living with an author. So without further ado, please give a warm welcome to Michael!
Michael is a Chartered Accountant, a keen gardener and an experienced bridge player. Over the years he has served as Chairman of his local tennis club, and has produced many mosaics. He is married to Leigh Russell and they have two daughters and a granddaughter, all of whom live nearby.
What’s the best bit about having a partner that is an author?
The peace and quiet when she’s writing! Also we have met many interesting people, and made very good friends in the crime writing community, which has been fantastic. I enjoy travelling so it’s been a bonus for me that Leigh’s writing has taken us all over the UK, to Europe, America, and even as far afield as the Seychelles.
Of course I have to ask, what is the worst bit about having a partner as an author?
There are no downsides, really. I play bridge and spend a lot of time in the garden, so we give each other space to get on with our own lives.
How much input do you have with their books?
Almost none. Leigh is very independent with her writing. Other than editorial input, she takes advice from police officers, scene of crime officers, forensic scientists, etc. However she did base one book, Journey to Death, on my experience of working abroad, and her long running Geraldine Steel series is set in York where I once lived.
What other roles do you have in supporting their work?
I take care of her admin, and we travel together on her promotional and research trips.
Does being so involved make you want to have a go at writing yourself?
Not at all. I am a numbers man, not a wordsmith. When Leigh’s doing a crossword, I’ll be doing a Sudoku puzzle.
Do you have any advice for anyone that lives with an author?
Don’t interrupt them when they’re working on edits!
Below you can find out more about Leigh and how to keep up to date with any news as well as her books. The Adulterer’s Wife, Leigh’s newest novel will be published by Bloodhound Books on the 7th of May.
Leigh Russell, author of the internationally bestselling Geraldine Steel crime series, has sold well over a million books worldwide.
Her novels have been translated into Chinese, French, German, Italian, and Turkish. Reaching #1 on Kindle, her books have been selected as Best Fiction Book of the Year by the Miami Examiner, voted Best Crime Fiction Book of the Year in Crime Time, a Top Read on Eurocrime and shortlisted for the John Creasey New Blood CWA Dagger Award, long listed for the CWA Dagger in the Library Award, and a finalist for the People’s Book Prize.
