Bookends: 📚 Robert Bryndza & Ján Bryndza 📚 @RobertBryndza @JanBryndza

Anyone that knows me, knows I am a huge fan of Robert Bryndza. I would like to go as far as saying I am his number one fan, though according to Ján’s info on Twitter, he is Rob’s biggest fan.  Ján, I think you will have a lot of stiff competition when it comes to that title 😉

One of my highlights from last year was getting to meet Rob and his husband Ján in Harrogate at Theakstons Crime Festival. Having got to know them on line it was lovely to finally meet them in person. This is another couple who live and work together. They are always on the go and would love even half of their energy as I don’t know how they do it all.

Before I hand you over to Ján, I just wanted to thank both him and Rob for taking part in my feature. So without further ado, please give a warm welcome to Ján.

Ján Bryndza was born in the magical town of Nitra, Czechoslovakia now Slovakia. He has worked in the fashion industry his entire life, first as a model and then a stylist and fashion journalist. He now works as an English to Slovak translator, and runs Team Bryndza Books, the publishing imprint for Robert Bryndza’s self published novels.

What’s the best bit about having a partner that is an author?

I get to read his fab books well in advance! We both love travelling, and promoting his books takes us to some beautiful places around the world, even though most of the time we only get to see the cities from the window of a taxi. What I think is the best bit, is that Rob brings the most amazing characters to life, and as a reader, I get to lose myself in his beautifully created worlds.

Of course I have to ask, what is the worst bit about having a partner as an author?

His writing schedule for the last couple of years has been crazy. We’ve had little time to enjoy the simple things that life offers. I think an author also needs time to live life, as this is what inspires their writing and gives them ideas.

How much input do you have with their books?

I usually read every chapter a couple of days after it’s written, and come to Rob with my thoughts. He is such an incredibly talented author, that there is hardly anything big that I think needs to be changed. It’s usually the smaller things we tidy up a little bit. Usually when he gets stuck with story or a problem with the plot he comes to me, we take our bikes for a ride and sort out everything on the go. Or if the weather is bad, we go and have a drink and work through any problems with the book he is working on. It works every time!

What other roles do you have in supporting their work?

Before Erika Foster, we were self-publishing Rob’s books, so we did everything ourselves. I did all the PR, and worked with bloggers and book sites…  It was fun, but hard work and there was lots of trial and error. I’m very proud of our work as self-publishers, and that we made his Coco Pinchard series bestsellers. It also gave us a massive advantage coming to mainstream publishing with the knowledge of how things work.

Does being so involved make you want to have a go at writing yourself?

Not anymore. We co- wrote Lost in Crazytown, which was lots of fun and a kind of therapy after moving back to Europe from LA. I already feel like I need a 48-hour day to do everything I need to do to help Rob. I achieved everything I always wanted in my previous job, as a model, so now I really enjoy the background work. Now it’s time for Rob’s incredible talent to shine.

Do you have any advice for anyone that lives with an author?

Give them space, let them chillax when they need to, and don’t take it personally when they look like they can’t be bothered with their surroundings. They are usually lost in the world of their next book!
