A Necessary End by Chris Tetreault Blay @TetreaultBlay

Book Description:

The Courtenay family is cursed, and doomed to repeat their cycle of despicable acts against their fellow man, all in the name of continuing their lineage. The curse comes in the form of the figure known as the Trickerjack, who serves the Devil to steal souls from the living. The family he was born from are far from normal. Fear, obsession, torture. They all exist as everyday activities for them. For the first time, the short stories that were featured in past releases ‘House of Courtenay’ and ‘Blackgang: The Trickerjack Trail’ are brought together to tell the Courtenay origin story from a new perspective, along with three brand-new tales. The backdrop is provided by the story of teenager Zack Charley, whose unquenchable curiosity takes him to a mysterious eerie-looking house above the deary town he lives in, owned and inhabited by one of the last-surviving Courtenay descendants. Once inside, he is taken on a journey he will never forget. And one he will likely never escape from.

My Thoughts:

I originally read most of this book when it was under the original titles as short stories. Having read and enjoyed them previously, I was very much looking forward to seeing how they were all presented in one longer length novel as well as reading the new tales.

This is a book that definitely fits perfectly into the horror genre. From the creepy eye catching cover alone, it oozes evil and what is contained within, it really is. One particular tale, I remember my first time reading it and how it made my skin crawl. Well it had the exact same affect on me second time around.

The story itself flicks between the present day with new kid in the area, Zach, becoming curious about an old house in the area. It then alternates to tales of members of the Courtenay family members and how the curse has affected them. It certainly is not for the more faint hearted readers but then if you are a horror fan, this just makes for an all round great read.

A Necessary End is a book that guarantees scares and thrills. It will shock and horrify you, yet you won’t be able to stop turning those pages as it really makes for a compulsive read. The authors writing eases the reader in nicely and then grabs you, not letting go until you turn that very last page. Great read.

My thanks to the author for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
