Book Description:
In the UK, someone is reported missing every 90 seconds.
Just gone. Vanished. In the blink of an eye.
DCS Kat Frank knows all about loss. A widowed single mother, Kat is a cop who trusts her instincts. Picked to lead a pilot programme that has her paired with AIDE (Artificially Intelligent Detective Entity) Lock, Kat’s instincts come up against Lock’s logic. But when the two missing person’s cold cases they are reviewing suddenly become active, Lock is the only one who can help Kat when the case gets personal.
AI versus human experience.
Logic versus instinct.
With lives on the line can the pair work together before someone else becomes another statistic?
In the Blink of an Eye is a dazzling debut from an exciting new voice and asks us what we think it means to be human.
My Thoughts:
This story explores what it could be like for the police force to work with AI (artifical intelligence). I loved the thinking of this as lets face it, they are making cars that drive themselves so realistically, things like this could be a possibility at some point in the future.
DCS Kat Frank is a single mother who has recently lost her husband. Coming back to work to get picked to lead a pilot programme does not go down well and when Kat is out in the field with Lock, I could completely understand her reservations. There are some humorous moments when it comes to Lock. Some I felt a bit guilty about but honestly, readers need to read this book for themselves. By the end I absolutely loved Lock and think the author wrote their part brilliantly.
The plot is superb! Seeing this team work together with very little to go on it seems like a massive task but it isn’t long before they uncover little snippets of information that lead them down a path which I think any want to be crime solver would struggle to work out. I know I certainly didn’t and I was bowled over by certain revelations. I have no idea if this book is a standalone or the first in a new crime series. I am hoping for the latter as I loved Kat as well as getting to know the team and would be great to see more of them.
It’s hard to believe that In The Blink of an Eye is the author’s debut novel. They write with such confidence and the plot is so tightly woven that I seriously struggled to put this book down. Not only is it highly engrossing but readers are going to love Kat and Lock and the cases make for some hair raising reading! This is a phenomenal story and I can see it being a much talked about read in 2023. I can’t wait to see what the author brings out next. A different take on a detective novel that blows others out of the water. Loved it!
My thanks to the publishers for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
